Missing Person: Angela Freeman

For as long as I can remember, I have known the name Angela Freeman and as the years have gone by I have become more and more intrigued by what happened to her. As a child, her name and picture were frequent occurrences on the local news broadcast. It was a case which never made sense at all. First thought to be a runaway teenager, dismissed by local law enforcement, the case would soon take a turn no one saw coming. By the time law enforcement became involved, rain and time had corrupted much of the evidence.

Angela’s case began on September 10th, 1993, when she called her mother to say she was on her way home from work. This was opposite to her nature as she would never leave and not tell her family where she was going. Local law enforcement immediately wrote the disappearance off as a runaway teen, telling her mother not to worry, she would come home in a day or two.

The day following her disappearance, her car was found by her uncle, who was taking a shortcut across the abandoned Manhad bridge to visit his girlfriend. Her car door was open, one of her shoes was found in the grass and the other she was found on the other side of a locked gate which led to private property. There was a large puddle evident beside the car which law enforcement dismissed as transmission fluid. This liquid would later be proved to be blood belonging to Angela.

Her purse and keys were never found. The river which ran underneath the bridge was dragged multiple times to no result. The case would soon go cold, all possible suspects having alibis which checked out. It is worth noting Angela was four months pregnant at the time of her disappearance. Her ex-boyfriend was suspected, but investigation cleared him. He had moved on and was seeing someone new and had expressed he had no desire to raise a child. Angela was undaunted, determined to raise the child on her own and the two had parted ways amiably.

Thirty-one years later, the disappearance of Angela Freeman remains an open case. No one understands what happened to the seventeen-year-old between when she phoned her mother to say she was coming home and her car being found abandoned with a puddle of blood beside it. Her family and friends continue to search and turn up new leads in the case. I was eleven years old when Angela went missing and as I grew up, I became obsessed with the case. In many ways, I feel I have grown up in the shadow of Angela Freeman. She has imprinted on me in a deeply meaningful way. Although I never knew her or had the opportunity to meet anyone in her family, I feel her haunting me in my soul.

That’s all for now, I’m just here trying to change the world one story at a time!
